Job Description Summary / TWC Summary

Under the general guidance of the Dean, School of Communication, the Department Chair is responsible for the administrative and academic functions of the Department of Communication Arts and Sciences. The Department Chair teaches at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels, leads the faculty in continued curricular development, engages in and promotes active research and leads initiatives to build the academic program and to secure necessary funding and accreditations. This is a 12-month tenure-track position.

Essential Duties Summary

Assumes responsibility for the administrative and academic functions of the department. Teaches at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels. Shows leadership in curriculum development, academic advising, student recruitment, grant writing and fundraising activities. Engages in and promotes involvement in research and scholarly activities. Performs other duties as assigned by the Dean of the School of Communication.

Education

Ph.D in any of the following areas: Speech Communication, Health Communication, Organizational Communication or Communication Studies is required. The successful applicant should be eligible for a tenure track appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor level.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Must show evidence of strong leadership and administrative skills. Record of involvement in research and scholarly activities. Qualified candidate must show leadership in curricular development, academic advising, and student recruitment activities. During the first year of probationary period, the candidate must initiate corporate relationships and sponsorships with professional communities and corporate organizations for the program needs and growth.

Work Experience

Minimum of three years of administrative experience as a chairperson or higher administrative positions. Minimum five years of teaching experience in higher education with evidence of leadership and administrative skills. Record of involvement in research and scholarly activities. Experience in working with a diverse university population is desired.

Leadership/Supervisory Responsibilities

Assists the Dean in supervising and directing the work activities of staff in the department, functional area or program. Supervises faculty and staff and provides overall direction and expectations for the department, functional area, or program. Has human resources responsibilities and authority for faculty and staff. This position typically reports to the Dean.

Work Complexity/Budget Authority

Tasks are multiple and diverse with some interrelationship across processes. Work requires the direct application of a variety of procedures, policies and/or precedents. The applicant must have some responsibility for budget and expenditure authority.

Independent Judgment/Decision Making/Problem Solving Skills

Develops objectives and general policies and procedures for a specific program or functional area of responsibility within general scope of established operational goals and plans. Day-to-day work and decisions do not require direction or review by immediate supervisor. Frequently solves complex problems. End results are reviewed by supervisor. Strategic issues are referred to supervisor.

Personal/Organizational Contacts

Regular contact with others, including students, general public, visitors and University personnel. Purpose of contacts is to explain, clarify or interpret information. May handle confidential information and some complex matters.

Customer Service Relationships

Anticipates customer needs and regularly motivates or influences others to deliver customer service excellence. May troubleshoot highly sensitive or confidential issues. Personally ensures problem resolution. Identifies barriers to effective customer service and sets customer service standards. Establishes a customer feedback system and holds self accountable for customer service excellence within the department or program.

Working/Environmental Conditions

Working conditions involve some exposure to moderate risk of accident and require following basic safety precautions. Physical demands include moderate physical activity that includes prolonged standing and/or walking, handling moderate weight objects and/or using or carrying equipment.
