Job Description Summary / TWC Summary

The APASOL will lead and facilitate the coordination of academic departments in the development of programs and courses offered online to address TSU Priorities. Responsible for working collaboratively with instructional teams, faculty, and other academic leaders to develop and provide high-quality online courses supporting TSU’s mission of offering innovative programs. Will provide leadership in developing and implementing professional development opportunities for all staff and faculty teaching online, provide leadership in the development, and leading the implementation of courses and programs as appropriate. The Assistant Provost for Academic Support and Online Learning will support all online education initiatives.

Essential Duties Summary

Quality assurance measures, and staying current with new technologies to enhance the online learning environment. Collaborating with Information Technology for infrastructure support of the online learning management system. Providing support services for students enrolled in online courses. Creating trainings and support for both students and faculty in the online learning environment. Ensuring compliance with accreditation standards. Strategic planning and management of the budget. Leading online professional staff. Managing the daily operations of TSU Online. Collaborating with the web design team to highlight and raise awareness of online course offerings. Creating partnerships with both public and private sectors. Negotiating and managing contracts with key vendors. Reporting to the Provost on the area’s plans and progress involving student enrollments, contact hours, fill rates, and student persistence, completion, placement rates, and if appropriate, accreditation status and licensure rates. Providing administrative leadership to the Directors, College Educational Technology Services to build faculty awareness and competency with instructional technology in teaching and learning environments. Performing other duties as assigned.

Education

Master’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university. Ph.D. degree preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Requires excellent interpersonal skills. Requires excellent written and verbal communication skills. Requires good analytical, research, investigative and problem resolution skills. Requires the ability to work with a diverse student population and all levels of faculty and staff. Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and in the use of job related databases such as Banner.

Work Experience

Requires seven (7) years of executive leadership and management experience in higher education.
Ten (10) years related experience with online learning.
Requires demonstrated leadership experience with online programs.
Experience or familiarity with the implementation of an LMS.

Leadership/Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervises a section within the department or a small department of direct reports. Includes some human resources responsibilities for direct reports. Confers with manager or director about human resources and operational issues. If no supervisory responsibilities, serves as single incumbent for critical function.

Work Complexity/Budget Authority

Tasks are multiple and diverse with some interrelationship across processes. Handles some unrelated functions. Work requires the direct application of a variety of procedures, policies and/or precedents. May monitor budget activities but no responsibility for budget and expenditure authority.

Independent Judgment/Decision Making/Problem Solving Skills

Performs duties within scope of general University policies, procedures and objectives. Analyzes problems and performs needs assessments. Uses judgment in adapting broad guidelines to achieve desired result. Regular exercise of independent judgment within accepted practices. Makes recommendations that affect policies, procedures and practices. Refers exceptions to policy and procedures to the supervisor.

Personal/Organizational Contacts

High-level contact with others in key positions. Contact usually involves several areas within the University and/or with community, government, business leaders, media and dignitaries. Typically handles highly sensitive and/or confidential information.

Customer Service Relationships

Anticipates customer needs and regularly motivates or influences others to deliver customer service excellence. May troubleshoot highly sensitive or confidential issues. Personally ensures problem resolution. Identifies barriers to effective customer service and sets customer service standards. Establishes a customer feedback system and holds self accountable for customer service excellence within the department or program.

Working/Environmental Conditions

Work is performed within routine office environment with no exposure to hazardous or unpleasant conditions. Physical demands are usually limited to sitting or standing in one location much of the time. Some stooping, lifting or carrying objects of light weight may be required.
